Standard Grid Connected System Specifications

The tabs below provide specifications for standard grid-tied solar system configurations, along with the minimum battery capacity required when a hybrid system is installed. These specifications apply to both single-phase and 3-phase installations.

For residential solar systems, a general rule is to limit inverter capacity to 10kW per phase, with a maximum export of 5kW per phase (inverters over 5kW require an energy meter and export limitation). On single-phase systems, solar arrays typically range from 6.6kWp to 13.2kWp. To optimize performance, the solar array is often oversized by around 132% of the inverter’s output capacity. This ensures that the inverter reaches its maximum output during peak sunlight hours, maximising the system’s efficiency.

System Size and Output Requirements

The next key factor in system sizing is the continuous and peak demand of the site which will determine the output required. We conduct a thorough load analysis, considering current and anticipated appliances. Once the data is analysed, we recommend sizing the system with about 30% extra output capacity to accommodate future growth, such as adding air conditioners. Additionally, using gas for water heating and cooking can help reduce electrical load and required storage capacity.

The graphs below show the expected continuous and peak output for standard single-phase systems, adaptable for split or 3-phase configurations with Victron.:

System Output in Ampere at 240V

System Output in Killowat at 240V

Backup Generators and Auto-Start Functionality

In a well-designed off grid system with a backup generator, a general rule is to match the generator’s output to that of the battery inverter. Victron systems offer great flexibility by allowing us to limit the generator’s input power while utilizing the Victron Power Assist feature. This feature enables the system to combine generator power with battery support to handle inrush loads, while also charging the battery system.

All our systems are equipped with a dedicated generator input on switchover, which powers the site’s loads independently. This setup is particularly useful in case of a system outage or when using low-capacity generators as a manual backup source. For auto-start generators, we typically configure the system to activate the generator when the battery’s state of charge (SOC) falls to 10%, and shut it down once the SOC reaches 30%. This minimizes generator runtime during backup situations.

Generators can also be set for manual operation, which requires user intervention to engage the generator in the event of a low battery shutdown, allowing the system to continue operation.

What Our Customers Say

I first met Louis from Volta Projects in 2021. Among all the solar companies I interacted with, Louis stood out as the most knowledgeable and professional. After thoroughly assessing my energy requirements across different sites, he provided detailed proposals that perfectly aligned with our needs while focusing on maximizing return on investment.

We engaged Volta to install solar solutions for our home, farm, and an off-grid system for our weekend property. Later, we entrusted Louis with designing a highly complex 200kW system for our commercial site in Grafton (Brewhouse Group). The installation was carried out by extremely professional technicians and completed promptly.

I wholeheartedly recommend Volta to anyone seeking energy solutions. Louis and his team exceeded our expectations in every aspect.

I engaged Louis at Volta Projects to install an off-grid system for our farm, his advice was invaluable and the system has worked without fault for years after install.

The system is vital for the running of pumps with water delivery to livestock and running a household. The installation team were also excellent in every aspect and they left the site very clean and tidy.

I also have referred Louis to friends and family including my mother and they also have received great service, tailored products and more importantly ongoing direct support and communication years after install.
